Welcome to Fun-iture, the collection of furniture designed to promote positive self-soothing methods through stimming and/or distraction. The collection consists of two unique chairs: the Blob Chair and the Squish Chair. The Blob Chair's insides resemble a lava lamp, and users can swivel in the chair to interact with the liquid inside. The Squish Chair's outside feels like a stress ball, and users can squish the unique material while also swiveling in the chair. Both chairs come in two sizes: a single person and a love seat.
Fun-iture was born out of a desire to create a new type of furniture typology that would accommodate stimming behavior, while still providing comfort and enjoyment. By accommodating stimming behavior, Fun-iture helps children manage over and underwhelming circumstances. Stimming is a self-stimulatory behavior characterized by repeating certain movements or sounds to keep the mind occupied. Stimming can be calming and self-soothing, making it an important coping mechanism for children with ASD, ADHD, or anxiety. Fun-iture provides a safe and socially acceptable way for children to stim, reducing the stigma around these behaviors.
Most waiting spaces for children are designed for function with little attention paid to the impact of design on patient stress responses. Fun-iture is designed to help mitigate these stress responses by providing amusement and distraction through interactive, sensory experiences.
